The source quality still matters
Choosing DWG instead of DXF does not create missing detail. A clean vector PDF usually converts better than a scan. Scanned plans may need manual redrawing regardless of the requested output format. DXF is an openly documented format that exists in many versions. Older releases such as R12 are read by almost every CAD, CAM and CNC package but store less object information; newer versions keep more entity types and properties. When a manufacturer, contractor or client asks for DXF, confirm which version their software expects and deliver that one — saving down to an older version is easy, recovering data that an old version cannot store is not.

Can I convert DXF to DWG later?
Yes. Any full CAD application can save a DXF file as DWG, and both formats describe the same geometry. Converting between them does not change lines, arcs, circles or text.
Does DWG contain more detail than DXF?
Not for a converted PDF drawing. The amount of recoverable detail is determined by the source PDF, not by the output extension. A DWG made from the same conversion contains the same geometry as the DXF.
Which format do laser cutters and CNC machines use?
Most fabrication and nesting software imports DXF, often an older version for maximum compatibility. Check the required version with your machine supplier before sending files to production.
