Check whether the PDF is vector or raster
Zoom closely into a line. Vector linework remains sharp; a raster drawing becomes pixelated because the page is an image. This distinction largely determines the DXF quality.
What conversion can preserve
A clean vector source may retain lines, polylines, circles, arcs and text. Layers, blocks and object intelligence may already have been flattened during PDF export and cannot simply be restored.
How scanned drawings are converted
Vectorization detects visible edges and reconstructs CAD geometry. Straight lines and closed circles are usually easier to recover than faint curves, overlapping details and damaged symbols.
Verify drawing scale
Measure a known dimension after opening the DXF. If a 5,000 mm distance measures 50 units, scale the drawing by 100. Never assume page size equals model-space size. See our scale guide.
Clean the result
- Remove duplicates and short fragments.
- Join connected lines into polylines.
- Check circles, arcs, text and orientation.
- Compare critical dimensions with the PDF.
DXF or DWG?
DXF is widely supported for exchange; DWG is convenient for continued AutoCAD work. The extension does not restore missing detail. Compare DWG and DXF.
