Which elements can be recovered?
Vector floor plans may contain extractable walls, doors, windows, grids, room text and dimensions. In scanned plans these elements must be recognized from pixels.
Walls and openings
Walls often appear as parallel lines. Cleanup joins fragments, removes duplicates and keeps openings readable. Curved walls need extra attention because simple tracing can turn them into short straight chords.
Vector floor plan or scanned floor plan?
The fastest way to predict conversion quality is to zoom closely into a wall or dimension line. If the edge stays sharp, the PDF probably contains vector information. If it becomes a grid of pixels, the page is a scan. A vector floor plan can often preserve exact line coordinates, circles and searchable text. A scan must first be interpreted as an image, so line thickness, shadows and skew can affect the reconstructed geometry. Text, dimensions and symbols
OCR can recover room names and some dimensions, but technical symbols do not automatically become intelligent CAD blocks. Verify critical dimensions and rebuild specialist symbols on dedicated layers when necessary.
Set the scale
Measure a known distance, divide the required length by the measured CAD length and apply that factor to the complete drawing. Read the full scale guide.
A practical floor-plan conversion workflow
- Use the original PDF export instead of a screenshot or preview.
- Determine whether each page is vector-based or scanned.
- Extract or trace the visible geometry into CAD entities.
- Remove duplicate lines, tiny fragments and page-frame artefacts.
- Recover text and dimensions without converting letters into outlines.
- Scale the complete drawing using a reliable reference dimension.
- Check walls, openings, grids and critical measurements against the PDF.
For design work, organise the result into practical layers such as walls, openings, text, dimensions and reference geometry. A PDF does not usually retain the original CAD layer names, so automatic layer reconstruction is an interpretation rather than a perfect recovery of the source model.

What should be checked after conversion?
Open the DXF or DWG in the CAD application you intend to use. Check insertion units, one long horizontal dimension and one vertical dimension. Inspect curved walls at high zoom, because a curve made of many short segments is harder to edit than a native arc. Also check door swings, hatches, room names and linework around dense symbols. Delete page borders or title-block elements only after confirming that they are not needed as a scale reference.
Floor plans for AutoCAD and Revit
AutoCAD users generally benefit from clean polylines, native arcs and editable text. Revit users normally use the CAD result as a linked underlay before modelling walls and components. Keep the converted file close to the project origin and avoid unnecessary geometry far outside the drawing, because this can create positioning and display problems in BIM software. Frequently asked questions
Can every floor-plan PDF be converted?
Most can, but a clean vector export produces a very different result from a blurred or skewed scan. Damaged sources may require manual reconstruction.
Does conversion restore the original layers?
Usually not. PDF is a presentation format and often flattens the original CAD structure. Useful layers can be rebuilt from geometry type and drawing context.
Can the result be used for construction measurements?
Only after scale and critical dimensions have been verified against a reliable source. Do not assume visual alignment proves accuracy.
